Kraft paper tape vs BOPP tape: which should seal your cartons?
We make BOPP tape on our own tape plant in Jaipur, so I am a little biased towards it. That is exactly why I have put the cost maths on this page, where you can check it yourself.
The short answer is this. Use BOPP tape when cost, rain and heavy cartons matter most. Use kraft paper tape when you ship in brown cartons, want a box with no plastic on it, and can accept paying about four to six times more per metre.
Both are good tapes, and they are simply good at different jobs.
What is the actual difference between the two?
BOPP tape is a thin plastic film (biaxially oriented polypropylene, i.e. polypropylene stretched in two directions) with a layer of adhesive on one side. It is the brown or clear tape you see on a lot of parcels in India.
Kraft paper tape has a paper backing instead of a plastic one. Ours is self-adhesive, so it sticks with pressure like any normal tape. You do not need water, heat or a special machine, and you can tear it by hand.
There is a third kind, water-activated gummed paper tape, which needs a wet dispenser. That is a different product, and this page does not cover it.
How much does each tape cost per roll and per metre?
These are our store prices at the time of writing (October 2026), with free delivery across India. All the tapes below are 2 inch (48 mm) wide.
| Tape | Roll length | Pack | Price | Per roll (approx.) | Per metre (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown BOPP | 65 m | 6 | Rs 379 | Rs 63 | Rs 0.97 |
| Brown BOPP | 65 m | 12 | Rs 649 | Rs 54 | Rs 0.83 |
| Transparent BOPP | 65 m | 6 | Rs 449 | Rs 75 | Rs 1.15 |
| Fragile print BOPP | 65 m | 6 | Rs 389 | Rs 65 | Rs 1.00 |
| Kraft paper tape | 50 m | 1 | Rs 299 | Rs 299 | Rs 5.98 |
| Kraft paper tape | 50 m | 12 | Rs 2,488 | Rs 207 | Rs 4.15 |
| Kraft paper tape | 50 m | 24 | Rs 4,669 | Rs 195 | Rs 3.89 |
Here is one rule of the trade. Always compare tape per metre, never per roll, because roll lengths are not the same. Our BOPP rolls are 65 m and our kraft roll is 50 m, so a "roll" of each is not the same amount of tape.
Now per carton. Take a common 30 x 20 x 15 cm box. One strip along the top seam, running about 7 cm down each end, is roughly 44 cm. Do the same on the bottom and you use roughly 0.9 m of tape per box.
That is about Rs 0.75 to Rs 1.05 per box with BOPP, and about Rs 3.50 to Rs 5.40 with kraft paper tape. At 500 orders a month, kraft costs you roughly Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,200 more.
Treat these as approximate figures, because your box size and your hand on the tape gun will change them.
When does kraft paper tape win?
- Your customer flattens the box for the raddiwala and there is no plastic strip to peel off first.
- Brown tape on a brown kraft carton looks clean and premium in an unboxing photo.
- It tears by hand, so a small seller packing at home does not need a tape gun at all.
- You can write on it with a marker: the order number, FRAGILE, or a thank-you.
- Paper tape tends to tear if someone tries to lift it, so a tampered box is easier to spot.
If your brand promise is a plastic-free parcel, kraft tape is the only honest choice.
A paper box sealed with plastic tape weakens that promise the moment the customer sees it.
When does BOPP tape win?
- Cost. At four to six times cheaper per metre, it is hard to beat at high volumes.
- Wet routes. Plastic film does not soak up water. Paper backing can soften if a box sits in the rain.
- Heavy or overfilled cartons. Here I would use BOPP, with three strips on the top and three on the bottom.
- Glossy, laminated or plastic surfaces. Our kraft tape is made for cardboard and paper surfaces. BOPP grips a wider range of materials.
One carrier view is worth knowing. The UPS packaging guidelines (PDF, November 2024) name pressure-sensitive plastic tape as acceptable and ask shippers not to use water-activated paper tape. Our kraft tape is self-adhesive, not water-activated, so that line does not describe it directly. Still, for heavy cartons going by courier, I would follow the carrier's preference and use BOPP.
How do you make either tape stick properly?
When tape lifts, check the surface before you blame the tape. A few habits fix most problems.
- Use a clean, dry carton. Recycled cartons shed fine dust, and adhesive sticks to the dust instead of the board.
- Press the tape down with your palm along its full length after you apply it. These adhesives bond with pressure, so a light touch gives a light bond.
- Test kraft tape on glossy or printed boxes before you order in bulk. If it lifts at the edges, use BOPP for those boxes.
- In a cold winter godown, any self-adhesive tape grabs less on first touch. Keep the rolls indoors and give them a firm press.
- Never stick the shipping label over the tape seam. Put it flat on the box face.
How should you store tape?
Keep all tape in a cool, dry place, out of direct sun. Heat softens the adhesive and the roll edges can start to ooze.
Kraft paper tape needs a little more care, because paper takes up moisture. Keep it in its wrapping until you use it, and keep it off damp floors, especially in the monsoon.
And use your oldest rolls first.
Which one should you buy first?
If you are not sure yet, a single kraft roll at Rs 299 and a 6-pack of brown BOPP tape at Rs 379 let you try both on your own cartons.
For fragile orders, the wrap matters more than the tape, and I have written a separate guide on packing fragile orders without plastic.
If you are buying for a warehouse rather than a home table, tell us your carton size and monthly volume, and we will suggest the tape.
Questions sellers ask about paper tape
Do I need to wet kraft paper tape?
No. Our listing mentions a water-based adhesive. That describes how the glue is made, not how you use it. You peel, stick and press, like any normal tape.
Can I use kraft tape on courier bags?
You should not need tape at all. Our courier bags close with their own self-seal strip. If you are deciding between a bag and a mailer, see our guide on padded paper mailers vs courier bags.
Can I mix both tapes on one box?
Yes. You can put BOPP on the bottom seam, which carries the load and nobody sees, and kraft paper tape on the top, where the customer looks first. It saves money. Just do not call that box plastic-free.
