Padded paper mailer or plastic courier bag: which suits your product?

We sell both, so I have no reason to push you towards one.

Each is the right answer for some products and the wrong answer for others. We list six sizes of each, and in a pack of 100 a padded mailer works out to roughly Rs 16 to Rs 36 apiece at our October 2026 prices.

Here is the short version. Use a plastic courier bag for soft products that cannot break but must stay dry: clothes, sarees, bedsheets, towels. Use a honeycomb padded paper mailer for small, light products that need some cushioning or a plastic-free unboxing: jewellery, books, phone accessories, cosmetics in plastic tubes, handmade crafts. Anything in glass, or anything heavy, goes in a carton.

How are the two actually different?

Plastic versus paper is the smaller difference.

One is a weather shield. The other is a small cushion.

Plastic courier bag Honeycomb padded paper mailer
Material 60-micron LDPE film Kraft paper outside, honeycomb paper padding inside
Cushioning None Yes, from the paper honeycomb lining
Rain Waterproof film Water-repellent outer, but it is still paper
Closing Permanent tamper-evident strip Self-seal adhesive strip
Invoice Attached POD (proof of delivery) jacket No pocket mentioned, so plan a separate pouch
Sizes 6x8 to 14x18 inches, six sizes M1 6x9 to M6 15x19 inches, six sizes
After use Plastic waste stream Paper waste stream. We list the padding as 100% recyclable

Most of this comes straight from our own product listings. I have kept the words close to what the listings say, because a claim like "waterproof" should mean the same thing on the blog as on the product page.

Which one should I use for my product?

These are my suggestions by product type. They are starting points to try with your own items, not lab results.

  1. Clothes, kurtis, sarees, bedsheets and towels go in a courier bag. Fabric does not break, and rain is the real risk. The size chart for these is in our courier bag size chart.
  2. Books, diaries and planners go in a padded mailer. A plain bag lets the corners get crushed in the courier sack. The honeycomb lining takes those knocks.
  3. Jewellery, watches, phone covers and cables go in a padded mailer, usually M1 or M2. The product is small, the box inside can dent, and a paper mailer opens nicely.
  4. Cosmetics in plastic tubes or jars go in a padded mailer. For glass bottles and jars, use a carton with wrap instead. Our guide on packing fragile orders without plastic shows how.
  5. Handmade crafts and art prints go in a padded mailer. For a print, add a stiff card inside so it does not bend.
  6. Anything heavy, bulky or with hard, sharp edges needs neither. Use a carton.

If your product sits between two of these, we suggest one question: what is more likely to hurt it on the way, a knock or the rain? A knock points to the mailer. Rain points to the courier bag.

What sizes and prices are we talking about?

Here are the padded mailer sizes, with the closest courier bag next to each. Prices are our store prices at the time of writing (October 2026), and delivery is free across India on every order.

Mailer Size (inches) Pack of 10 Pack of 100 About per mailer at 100 Closest courier bag
M1 6x9 Rs 249 Rs 1,599 Rs 16 6x8, Rs 199
M2 9x11 Rs 349 Rs 1,899 Rs 19 10x12, Rs 359
M3 10x13 Rs 369 Rs 2,499 Rs 25 10x14, Rs 379
M4 11x15 Rs 399 Rs 2,799 Rs 28 12x16, Rs 449
M5 12x16 Rs 469 Rs 3,199 Rs 32 12x16, Rs 449
M6 15x19 Rs 499 Rs 3,649 Rs 36 14x18, Rs 549

The per-mailer figures are simple division, rounded, so treat them as approximate. Packs of 50 are also on the padded mailer listing. For courier bags, see the courier bag listing for pack contents before you work out a per-bag cost.

Two cautions on that table.

First, the honeycomb lining takes up some room inside, so a padded mailer holds less than a flat courier bag with the same numbers on it. If your product is close to the limit, go one mailer size up. Second, "closest" means closest in size, not equal in what they do.

Is the paper mailer more expensive?

Probably, if you compare bag to bag, because it does more. This is the rule I would use. Compare a padded mailer with a courier bag plus whatever you would wrap inside it, not with the bag alone.

If you are already putting bubble wrap or a honeycomb sheet around a book before it goes into a courier bag, the mailer may cost you about the same and saves a step at the packing table. If you put nothing inside the courier bag, the courier bag is the cheaper choice, and that is fine for a t-shirt.

Where does each one fall short?

I will be honest about both.

Our courier bags are plastic, 60-micron LDPE film as we state on the listing. They give zero cushioning, and a brand that promises plastic-free packaging cannot use them without breaking that promise.

The paper mailer is not a raincoat.

We describe its outer as water-repellent, which helps with a damp floor or a short shower. A parcel sitting in an open van through a heavy monsoon afternoon is a different matter. If we were shipping products that hate damp in July and August, we would put the product in its own small inner bag inside the mailer, or use the courier bag for those 2 months.

Neither of them is a box. I would not trust a padded mailer with a glass perfume bottle. That needs a carton, wrap and void fill.

Common questions

Can I recycle the paper mailer? We list the honeycomb padding as 100% recyclable paper. Whether it actually gets recycled depends on your customer's local waste collection, so a short line on the mailer or the invoice telling them it goes with paper waste is worth adding.

Which one looks better when the customer opens it? That is your brand's call, not mine. Kraft paper reads as natural and handmade. A plain opaque courier bag reads as practical. Pick the one that matches what your product page promises.

Can I try both before I buy? Yes. Our sample listing has both a courier bag and a honeycomb mailer variant, listed at Rs 0. Pick the one you want to test on the listing, pack your real product in it and drop it from table height 3 or 4 times.

That one test will tell you more than this whole article.
