Eco-friendly packaging for a small business in India: what to switch first
Most small sellers who ask me about eco-friendly packaging want to do the right thing. Then they look at the full list of plastic in one parcel and do nothing, because it feels like a big change.
It does not have to be one change.
Here is the short answer. Switch one item at a time, in this order: kraft paper tape in place of plastic tape, honeycomb paper or kraft bubble sheets in place of bubble wrap, paper void fill in place of air pillows, padded paper mailers for small items, and crinkle paper in gift boxes. Keep a plastic courier bag where rain is the real risk.
We make plastic tape and paper packaging on our own lines in Jaipur, and we have done so since 1997. So I have no reason to push you one way. I will tell you where each swap works and where it does not.
What does "eco-friendly packaging" mean for a small seller?
The phrase is used loosely, so let me keep it practical. For a seller shipping 50 or 500 orders a month, it usually means two things:
- Less plastic inside and on the parcel.
- Material your customer can put out with paper waste, without peeling or sorting anything.
That is the standard I use in this guide.
I am not going to call any paper product perfect for the planet. Paper also uses trees, water and energy. But a carton that is all paper is far easier for your customer to get rid of than a carton wrapped in plastic tape and stuffed with bubble wrap.
Which plastic should I replace first?
Start with whatever goes on every single order. For most sellers, that is the tape.
| Plastic you use now | Paper swap on PackSmith | Works well for | Keep plastic when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic packing tape | Brown kraft paper tape, 48 mm x 50 m | Brown cartons, light and medium boxes | Heavy cartons, wet routes |
| Bubble wrap | Honeycomb paper roll (390 mm, 10 m or 100 m) or sheets (390 x 500 mm) | Glass, ceramics, cosmetics, gifts | Heavy items, long rough trips |
| Bubble wrap on flat items | Kraft paper bubble wrap sheets, 300 x 400 mm | Books, frames, eyeshadow palettes | Very heavy or sharp items |
| Air pillows or plastic loose fill | Void fill paper, 380 x 250 mm sheets | Filling side gaps in a carton | A large, very light box |
| Plastic padded mailer | Honeycomb padded paper mailer, M1 to M6 | Jewellery, books, small accessories | Anything that may sit in rain |
| Plastic shred in gift boxes | Crinkle paper, 500 g or 1 kg | Hampers and festive boxes | Never needed for protection |
| Courier bag for clothes | Keep the courier bag | Clothes, sarees, bedsheets | Monsoon months, always |
The last row is not a mistake. More on it below.
Why start with the tape?
Because it is on every box, and because it decides whether the box can go out with paper waste as it is. A paper carton sealed with plastic tape is not a paper carton any more.
Someone has to peel the tape off first, and most people do not bother.
Our kraft paper tape is self-adhesive, 48 mm wide and 50 m long. It needs no water and no machine. You tear it by hand or run it on a normal 2 inch tape dispenser, and it comes as a single roll or in packs of 12 and 24.
Now the honest part. Paper tape costs more per metre than plastic tape, and a roll is 50 m against 65 m for our plastic rolls. It also does not like rain, and for a heavy carton going by courier I would still use plastic tape. I have put the full maths in kraft paper tape vs BOPP tape.
We sell both tapes, and we would rather you choose the right one for the box than the one that looks greener.
What replaces bubble wrap?
For most fragile orders, honeycomb paper. It is kraft paper with small slits. When you pull it, it opens into a net of cells that grip the product and take the knocks. The cells lock into each other, so the wrap usually needs no tape.

We sell it as a roll (390 mm wide, 10 m or 100 m, seven colours) and as pre-cut sheets of 390 x 500 mm. For flat things like books and frames, kraft paper bubble wrap sheets of 300 x 400 mm are simpler to use.
Where paper falls short, I will say plainly.
Heavy items such as a cast iron pan or a mixer grinder need bubble wrap or air cushions. Paper cells crush under a hard hit and stay crushed. The comparison is in honeycomb paper vs bubble wrap, and the step-by-step method is in how to pack fragile orders without plastic.
Do I need paper void fill as well?
Only if your boxes are bigger than your products, which is true for most sellers. Wrap protects the product's surface. Void fill stops the product from moving in the box, and movement is what breaks things.
Crumpled sheets of 380 x 250 mm paper do this job. A rule of the trade here: if a box needs a huge pile of paper, change the box, not the paper. A smaller box saves paper and often saves freight too, because couriers charge on size as well as weight.
Paper is heavier than air pillows for the same space. On a small parcel the difference is a few grams. On a large, very light box (a pillow or a soft toy) air pillows can make more sense.
Our group makes air cushion film too, so this is not a sales line for paper.
What about courier bags and mailers?
This is where I disagree with a lot of the eco advice online.
For clothes, sarees and bedsheets, a plastic courier bag is still the right pack. Fabric does not break, rain is the real risk, and our courier bags are 60 micron LDPE film that keeps water out. A paper envelope in a wet courier van during the monsoon is how you get a soaked kurti and a return.
We keep both on the store for exactly this reason.
For small dry items such as jewellery, books, phone accessories and handmade gifts, a padded paper mailer works well. It has kraft paper outside and honeycomb paper padding inside, in six sizes from M1 (6x9 inch) to M6 (15x19 inch). I have compared the two in padded paper mailer or courier bag.
Does India's single-use plastic ban cover my packaging?
For most sellers, not yet. The ban that started on 1 July 2022 covers a named list of items, such as plastic cutlery, straws, plates, cups, and the thin plastic film wrapped around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets (PIB, 2022). Plastic carry bags thinner than 120 micron have also been banned since 31 December 2022.
Packing tape, bubble wrap and courier bags are not on that list. So for most online sellers, switching is a choice, not a legal must.
One exception matters to home bakers and sweet sellers. If you wrap a sweet box in thin plastic film, that film is on the banned list. Our article on the single-use plastic ban goes into more detail.
How do I switch without upsetting customers or my costs?
- Write down every piece of packing material in one typical parcel, including the tape.
- Pick one item from the table above. I would start with the tape.
- Order a sample first. The sample is free, and you pay only the courier charge.
- Pack 20 real orders with it and watch the returns and damage complaints.
- Add one line on your invoice telling the customer the packing can go out with paper waste.
- Move to the next item a month later.
Think of it like moving the family from plastic carry bags to a cloth jhola. Nobody changes the whole house in one day. You start with the bag you use every morning.
Questions sellers ask us
Is kraft paper tape strong enough for courier boxes?
For light and medium cartons, yes. It sticks with pressure like any normal tape, and paper tape tends to tear if someone tries to lift it, so tampering shows. For heavy cartons, or boxes that may sit in rain, I would still use plastic tape with three strips on top and three on the bottom.
Will paper packaging push up my courier charges?
Usually not by much. Paper adds a few grams to a small parcel. What changes courier charges more is the box size, so a right-sized box with a little paper fill often costs less than a big box with lots of fill.
Can my customer recycle the packaging?
The paper can go out with paper waste, and a carton sealed with paper tape can go with it as it is. Whether it actually gets recycled depends on the waste collection where your customer lives. A short note on the invoice helps them do it right.
If you want help choosing where to start, send us your product, your carton size and your monthly orders. We will suggest the first swap, and we will tell you honestly if plastic is still the better choice for your product.
