Cello tape or BOPP tape: which clear tape does an online seller need?
Sellers often ask us to compare "cello tape" with "BOPP tape". I understand the question. The two names sit on different listings, sometimes at different prices.
We make BOPP tape in our own plant in Jaipur, so we hear this from both sides of the counter.
Here is the short answer. In India, "cello tape" is simply the everyday name for clear tape. The name comes from cellophane, but almost every clear packing roll sold today, ours included, is BOPP film with glue on one side. So the real choice is not cello against BOPP. It is the width, the roll length and how well the glue holds.
For most online sellers, I would start with 2 inch x 65 m tape on a hand dispenser. Move to 300 m or 500 m rolls once you are changing rolls every day.
Is cello tape the same as BOPP tape?
Mostly, yes. BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene. The film is stretched in both directions when it is made, which makes it thin, clear and hard to tear along its length. Our own clear cello tape is BOPP film, and so is our packing tape.
The difference you feel between two rolls comes from three things you cannot see on the shelf:
- How much glue is on the film. A thin coat looks the same on day one and lets go later.
- How thick the film is. Thin film stretches more as you pull it, and stretched film tries to shrink back.
- How many metres are on the roll. Two rolls of different lengths look almost identical in a pack.
So when a cheap roll fails, it is usually not because it is "cello" and not "BOPP".
It is because money was saved in one of these three places. We state the roll length on every tape listing on PackSmith for exactly this reason.
Which width should you buy: 1, 2 or 3 inch?
Match the width to the carton, not to the price of the roll.
| Width | What it is good for | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch (24 mm) | Office use, envelopes, small pouches, a lid strip on a food box | On a carton seam it needs two or three strips, which wastes time and tape |
| 2 inch (48 mm) | Almost every ecommerce carton, on a standard hand dispenser | On big or heavy cartons one strip holds too little of each flap |
| 3 inch (72 mm) | Large cartons, heavy cartons, wide flap gaps, export boxes | Needs a 3 inch dispenser, and it is more tape than a small box needs |
There is also a public benchmark here. India Post's Parcel Packaging Standards (Parcel Directorate, 2022) ask for BOPP tape at least 2 inches wide on parcel boxes. You can read the India Post parcel packaging standards yourself. So keep 1 inch tape for envelopes and small jobs, not carton seams.
A courier bag needs no tape at all. The self-seal strip does the job, and tape on a tamper-evident bag only hides the evidence.
Clear tape or brown tape on a brown kraft carton?
On a plain brown carton, I suggest brown.
It matches the board, and it hides dust, scuffs and fingerprints. That is why we suggest brown tape for a seller's first order.
Clear tape on kraft board is fine if you press it down well. If you do not, every bit of trapped air and dust shows as a silver patch, and the box looks used before it leaves your table.

Choose clear when the box is white or printed, or when there is writing on the carton you want to keep visible. One rule for both colours: never run tape over the shipping label's barcode. India Post's standards say the same thing about tape and labels. Shine or a wrinkle on top of a barcode can make it hard to scan.
Our brown tapes and our clear tapes come in the same 2 inch x 65 m size, so you can keep both on the table.
Why does cheap cello tape let go in summer, or on dusty cartons?
The glue on packing tape is a soft layer, a bit like very thick honey that never dries. It grips when you press it, because it flows into the tiny gaps in the carton surface.
Heat makes that layer softer still. A parcel packed in your room can spend the afternoon in a closed van or a tin-roof godown in May, which is much hotter. If the glue coat is thin, and the film was stretched as it went on, the strip slowly creeps. The ends lift first. Then the flap opens.
Dust is a different problem. Glue holds the first thing it touches. If the carton face is dusty, the tape holds the dust, and the dust holds nothing. It is like sticking a poster on a wall nobody has wiped since last Diwali. Recycled kraft board also sheds loose fibre, which acts the same way.
Tape makers know this well. Intertape Polymer Group, a large North American tape maker, lists high recycled content cartons, dusty conditions, humidity and temperature extremes as "problem" applications in its 2022 carton sealing tape guide, and sells separate adhesive grades for them. A thin, cheap glue coat has no margin left for any of it.
What you can do, whatever tape you buy:
- Wipe the carton face with a dry cloth if your board sheds dust.
- Store rolls indoors, out of the sun, and away from the window.
- Let the tape lie on the box. Do not pull it tight like a rope.
- Rub every strip down with your palm, especially the ends.
How to tape the carton itself, the H method and the overlap, is in our sibling guide on how to tape a shipping carton.
How many orders does one 65 m roll seal?
Fewer than most people think.
Let me show the maths for one common carton, 30 x 20 x 15 cm, sealed with the H pattern on both the top and the bottom.
- The centre strip runs along the 30 cm seam, plus about 6 cm down each end. That is 42 cm.
- Each edge strip crosses the 20 cm width, plus 6 cm down each side. That is 32 cm, and there are two.
- One face takes 42 + 32 + 32 = 106 cm. Top and bottom take 2.12 m.
- 65 m divided by 2.12 m is about 30 cartons.
Now be honest about waste. Bad cuts, a strip that folds onto itself, re-taping a box after a last-minute change, and the last turn on the core all eat tape. With roughly 10% lost, a 65 m roll seals about 27 cartons of this size.
If you use only one strip on the top and one on the bottom, the same carton takes 0.84 m, and the roll stretches to about 77 cartons, or about 70 after waste. That is fine for a light box of clothes. It is not enough for anything heavy or fragile.
The carton's height does not change any of this, by the way. Only the length and width of the flaps do.
When should you move to 300 m or 500 m rolls?
Here is the same 30 x 20 x 15 cm carton, with full H-tape, on each roll length.
| Roll length | Cartons per roll (no waste) | Cartons per roll (about 10% waste) |
|---|---|---|
| 65 m | about 30 | about 27 |
| 300 m | about 140 | about 127 |
| 500 m | about 235 | about 212 |
My simple rule: if your packer changes a 65 m roll more than once a day, that is roughly 25 to 30 cartons a day, move to long rolls. Every roll change stops the packing, and every roll leaves a little tape on the core.

We make long rolls for exactly this seller. We sell 2 inch clear tape in 300 m and 500 m rolls, and the same lengths in 3 inch. To compare prices fairly, divide the listing price by the total metres in the pack. See each listing for today's price.
Long rolls are not free of trouble, and I would not hide that:
- A 300 m roll is much fatter and heavier than a 65 m roll. Check the largest roll your dispenser takes before you order. You may need a heavier dispenser, or a table-top one.
- You are tied to one width and one colour for a long time.
- In the monsoon, a big roll sitting near a damp wall is a lot of tape to spoil. Keep it on a shelf.
Which listing should you actually order from?
We list clear tape in a few formats and pack sizes. Here is how I would choose:
- Just starting, or a few parcels a week: a set of 6 rolls in 2 inch.
- Packing every day: the cello tape listing, which has 1, 2 and 3 inch widths in sets of 6 to 30 rolls. Compare the per-roll price across pack sizes before you order.
- Changing rolls every day: the 300 m or 500 m rolls.
Not sure about the grip on your own cartons? Our free packaging sample has a transparent tape and a brown tape variant. Stick a strip on your own carton, leave it overnight in the warmest corner of your godown, and pull it the next morning.
One more honest point. BOPP is plastic. It is the cheaper and stronger choice for most sellers, but if your brand promises plastic-free packaging, read kraft paper tape vs BOPP tape before you buy.
Questions sellers ask about clear tape
Does clear tape turn yellow?
It can, after long storage in sun and heat. That is one more reason to keep spare rolls in a drawer, not on a windowsill. For cartons that ship within days, it does not matter.
Can I put clear tape over the shipping label to protect it from rain?
I would not cover the barcode. If rain is your worry, a self-adhesive document pouch over the label area, kept clear of the barcode, is the better fix. Ask your courier what they accept.
How do I check that a roll really has 65 m?
The easiest way is to compare. Weigh a new roll from your current supplier against a new roll from us on a kitchen scale. If one is much lighter for the same width, the length or the glue coat is shorter somewhere.
Tape is what we make every day in Jaipur. Write to us with your carton size and how many orders you ship a day, and we will tell you which width and roll length we would buy in your place.
