Foam, tissue or nano tape: which double-sided tape do you need?

Double-sided tape is the one tape on a packing table that the customer should never see. It holds the lid of a gift box shut, keeps a thank-you card in place and fixes a price card to a shelf.

If anyone notices it, something has gone wrong.

Here is the short answer. Use tissue tape for paper and board jobs inside the box, like gift box flaps, wrapping paper and inserts. Use foam tape to mount light signs and displays on hard surfaces. Use nano tape for light things on smooth surfaces that you may want to move later. None of them is the right answer for a mirror, a glass shelf or a rough cement wall.

What is the difference between foam tape, tissue tape and nano tape?

We sell all three on PackSmith, and sellers often ask us to compare them. All three have adhesive on both faces. What sits in the middle makes the difference.

Double-sided tissue tape Double-sided foam tape Nano tape
What it is A thin tissue layer with adhesive on both sides A soft foam core with adhesive on both sides A clear gel tape
Our sizes 1 inch x 50 m 24 mm x 2.5 m, and 2 inch x 2.5 m 30 mm x 3 m, 2 mm thick
Packs 2, 6 or 12 rolls Set of 6 rolls 1 roll
Lies flat? Yes, almost invisible under paper No, it adds thickness No, it adds 2 mm
Best on Paper, card, board, gift wrap Hard, smooth surfaces Glass, tile, marble, metal, plastic, finished wood
Comes off? Not meant to. It usually tears the paper Treat it as semi-permanent Yes. Peel it off, wash it and reuse it

The quick rule I would give a new packer: paper to paper, use tissue. Something mounted on a wall or shelf, use foam. Something you may move next month, use nano.

Which double-sided tape should you use for which job?

Job Tape Why
Closing the lid flap of a gift box or rigid box Tissue tape Flat and hidden, so the box looks factory-finished
Wrapping paper around a box with no visible tape Tissue tape Hides under the paper fold
Fixing a thank-you card or insert inside the lid Tissue tape One small piece holds a card without bulk
Sticking a sample sachet onto a card Tissue tape Thin, so the card still fits the box
A price card or offer strip on a shop shelf edge Foam tape, 24 mm The foam grips a shelf edge that is not perfectly flat
A light acrylic or foam board sign at the counter Foam tape, 2 inch Wider strip, more contact on the back of the board
A phone holder at the packing table for unboxing videos Nano tape Moves when your table layout changes
A power strip under the packing table Nano tape Keeps it off the floor, comes off clean on smooth wood or metal
Kitchen tool rack or soap holder on a tiled wall Nano tape Tile is smooth, and the tape itself is waterproof
A light photo frame on glass or a smooth cupboard door Nano tape Removable without marks on smooth surfaces
A name plate on a smooth door Foam tape Foam fills small dips in the surface
A mirror, a glass shelf, or anything over a bed None Use screws or a proper bracket

How do you use tissue tape on gift boxes and inserts?

Tissue tape is what gift packers reach for first. It holds paper to paper and stays out of sight.

Two rolls of PackSmith double-sided tissue tape, 1 inch wide
  1. Stick the tape to the box or the flap first, with the liner still on top.
  2. Press it down along its full length with your thumb.
  3. Peel the liner only when the paper or flap is ready to close.
  4. Press the closed flap for a few seconds. Paper bonds best under firm pressure.

We sell it in packs of 2, 6 or 12 rolls, with 50 m on every roll. Here is a simple sum for planning. If you use two 5 cm pieces to close each gift box, one 50 m roll closes about 500 boxes. For the festive rush, the 6 or 12 roll pack of our double-sided tissue tape saves a mid-season reorder.

One limit.

Tissue tape is thin, so it has nothing to fill a gap with. On a rough board edge or a bumpy surface, it touches only the high points and lets go. That is a foam tape job.

When should you use foam tape?

Use foam tape when the thing you are mounting is light, and one of the two surfaces is not perfectly flat. The foam squeezes into the small dips and gives the adhesive more contact.

We sell double-sided foam tape in two widths, both 2.5 m per roll in sets of 6. That gives you 15 m per set. The 24 mm roll suits shelf strips, small name plates and display edges. The 2 inch roll gives more grip on the back of a wider board.

Here is one tip I give everyone. Cut short squares and put one at each corner, plus one in the middle for a bigger board. A full-length strip down one side lets the other side peel away first.

Be clear about one thing before you start.

Foam tape is semi-permanent. When you pull it off, some foam and adhesive usually stay behind and need scraping. On a painted wall, the paint can come off with it.

Is nano tape really reusable?

Yes, on the right surface.

Our nano tape is a clear gel tape, 3 m long, 30 mm wide and 2 mm thick. We sell it as a single roll, and you can cut it to any length with scissors. When the hold gets weak, rinse it in water, let it dry in the air and use it again.

It works best on smooth surfaces: glass, tile, marble, metal, plastic and finished wood. For a heavier item, use several pieces spread across the back, not one strip in the middle.

We do not give a weight figure for it, on purpose.

The hold changes with the surface, the dust and how much tape you use, and a number on the pack would make people trust it with things it should not hold. I would rather you test it for a few days with something that will not break if it falls.

How do you make double-sided tape hold properly?

Most tape failures I hear about are surface failures, not tape failures. A dusty, damp or greasy wall will beat any tape.

3M publishes clear guidance on this for its own foam mounting tapes and wall strips. We give the same basics for every double-sided tape we sell:

  1. Clean the spot with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. For its foam tapes, 3M suggests a 50:50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water (3M surface preparation bulletin, 2012). Skip soap and household cleaners. 3M's strip instructions say not to use them.
  2. Let it dry completely.
  3. Apply at normal room temperature. 3M's instructions for its Command wall strips say to use them indoors between 10 and 40°C (3M Command instructions).
  4. Press hard. 3M's strip instructions ask for 30 seconds of firm pressure on each strip.
  5. Wait before you load it. In the same bulletin, 3M says its foam tape reaches about 50% of full strength after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours and 100% after 72 hours at room temperature. So fix the tape today and hang the item tomorrow.
  6. On a freshly painted wall, wait. 3M tells Command users to wait 7 days after painting.

These are 3M's figures for 3M products. Our tapes are not the same products, but the reasons behind the steps (clean, dry, pressure, time) apply to any adhesive.

Where does double-sided tape fail?

Every adhesive has limits, ours included. These are the four cases where I would not rely on any double-sided tape.

  1. Heavy loads. A mirror, a glass shelf, a TV, or anything hanging over a bed or a child's table needs screws. 3M's own Command instructions say not to hang valuable items or to hang over beds.
  2. Rough walls. Cement plaster, textured paint and brick give the tape only a few high points to grab. 3M's bulletin says porous surfaces such as wood, particleboard and cement need to be sealed before tape can bond well.
  3. Humid bathrooms. The nano tape itself is waterproof. The bond is another matter. 3M notes that on glass, stone and ceramic surfaces (tile included), water vapour can undercut a tape bond in high humidity. Fix it on dry tile, press hard for a minute and give it a few hours before you hang anything.
  4. Painted walls. Paint can lift with any strong adhesive, and weak or fresh paint lifts first. Test a small piece in a corner for a few days before you put up the real thing.

Questions buyers ask

Can I seal a shipping carton with double-sided tape?

No. Double-sided tape is for jobs inside the box. A carton needs packing tape across its seams, and how to tape a shipping carton shows the method.

Will nano tape leave marks when I remove it?

On smooth surfaces such as tile and glass, it is made to come off without sticky residue. On a painted wall, test first.

Which one should a new seller keep at the packing table?

We would start with tissue tape. It handles most inside-the-box jobs. I have listed the rest of a first packing table in the small seller packing station starter kit. And if you want your brand on the outside of the box, read is custom logo packing tape worth it.

We dispatch in 1 to 2 working days and delivery is free across India, so you can order one pack and test it on your own surface this week.

Or tell us what you want to stick, and to what, and we will suggest the tape. I will be honest with you.

Sometimes the right answer is two screws.
