Custom logo packing tape for small brands: is it worth it?

Sellers often ask us to print their logo on packing tape. Before I talk about colours or artwork, I ask one question back. How much tape do you use in a month?

The answer decides almost everything.

Here is the short answer. Logo tape is worth it when you ship in cartons and you will use 360 rolls in about a year and a half. That usually means a brand already using around 20 rolls of 2 inch tape a month. Below that, plain tape plus a printed sticker, or one of our ready-printed tapes, is the smarter spend for now.

What do you get when you order logo tape from PackSmith?

The facts first, so you can plan.

  1. We print logos on 48 mm (2 inch) packing tape, in brown or clear.
  2. The minimum order is 5 boxes of 72 rolls, i.e. 360 rolls.
  3. The order is ready in about 14 days.
  4. You start with an enquiry on our contact page, not through the cart.

The tape itself is BOPP, the same film we make every day in our own plant in Jaipur. For the maths below I am taking 65 m rolls, the length of our standard 48 mm tapes. Confirm the roll length when you enquire. At 65 m, one minimum order is 360 x 65 = 23,400 metres of tape.

Why a minimum at all? Think of wedding cards. The press takes the same time to set up whether you print 50 cards or 500, so a tiny run costs a lot per card. Tape printing works the same way. Every new design needs its own set-up on the line, and below a few boxes that cost sits on too few rolls.

I will be honest about one limit.

If 360 rolls is too many for you, we are not the right printer today. Some printers take smaller runs. That is a fair route, and if you take it, ask them the roll length before you compare prices.

How long will 360 rolls of logo tape last?

This is the sum most people skip. Tape per carton depends on the carton size and how you tape it. The figures below use one strip along the seam, with about 6 cm folded down each end, on the top and the bottom. "Full H" adds a short strip across each end of the seam. If you want the method, read how to tape a shipping carton.

These are approximate, and they assume 65 m rolls.

Carton (cm) Taping Tape per carton Cartons per 65 m roll Cartons from 360 rolls
30 x 20 x 15 One strip, top and bottom about 0.84 m about 77 about 27,800
30 x 20 x 15 Full H, top and bottom about 2.12 m about 30 about 11,000
45 x 35 x 30 One strip, top and bottom about 1.14 m about 57 about 20,500
45 x 35 x 30 Full H, top and bottom about 3.02 m about 21 about 7,700

Now turn that into months. This is 23,400 m divided by the metres you use each month.

Cartons per month At about 1 m per carton At about 2 m per carton At about 3 m per carton
300 about 78 months about 39 months about 26 months
600 about 39 months about 20 months about 13 months
1,000 about 23 months about 12 months about 8 months
2,000 about 12 months about 6 months about 4 months

Add a little for wastage and for re-taping returns. The picture does not change much.

Why care about months? Because tape glue does not wait forever. 3M, for example, tells buyers of its Scotch 371 box sealing tape to store it at 4 to 27°C and 40 to 50% humidity, out of sunlight, and to use it within 18 months of manufacture for best performance (3M technical data sheet, 2024).

A tin-roof godown in May is far hotter than that.

So my planning rule is simple.

Aim to finish a logo tape order within about a year and a half. That is roughly 1,300 m a month, or about 20 rolls of 65 m.

Who should order logo tape, and who should wait?

It suits you if:

  1. You ship around 450 to 600 cartons a month with full H taping, or more. The sum works easily.
  2. You ship about 300 cartons a month, tape big cartons heavily and also use the same tape on inner gift boxes. It can work, but expect the order to last two years or more, so keep it somewhere cool.
  3. You run a gifting brand. Every box is a present, and the person who receives it may be the next buyer.
  4. You are a D2C brand that cares about unboxing. A plain brown strip says nothing. A clean logo on every seam says you are a real company before the box is even opened.

Wait for now if:

  1. You ship 50 or 100 parcels a month. 360 rolls would sit in your store room for years.
  2. You mostly ship in courier bags. They seal with their own strip and use almost no tape, so the logo would hardly show up anywhere. A printed sticker on the bag does more for you.
  3. Your brand name or logo may change in the next year.
  4. You promise plastic-free packaging. Our logo tape is BOPP, which is plastic. Read kraft paper tape vs BOPP tape before you decide.

Is printed tape better than plain tape plus a sticker?

For a growing brand, both are good answers. They suit different stages.

Minimum 360 rolls As few as you want

Here is how I would decide. If your volume is still small or your design is still changing, use plain tape and a sticker. If you already own a thermal label printer, a 2x1 inch direct thermal label can carry your shop name and Instagram handle in black, at no extra set-up. Move to logo tape when the volume is steady and the sticker step starts eating packing time.

What should you put on custom packing tape?

Keep it simple. A 48 mm strip is seen for a few seconds, often from a metre away.

  1. Use one or two colours. Each colour usually adds set-up, so ask us what your design needs and what each colour adds before you finalise it.
  2. Make the logo bold. Thin lines, tiny text and soft gradients get lost on a narrow strip.
  3. Add your website or Instagram handle. The delivery person, the neighbour and the family at home all see the box. The handle turns that into a free advert, and it helps a happy customer find you to reorder.
  4. Check the repeat. Measure the shortest seam you tape, usually the top of your smallest carton. Ask for a logo that repeats within that length, so every strip on every face shows at least one full logo. On a 30 cm seam, a design that repeats every 15 cm shows twice.
  5. Think about the background. On clear tape, your carton becomes the background of your logo. Print your design on paper, hold it against a brown carton and see if it still reads.

How do you enquire about logo tape?

Write to us through the contact page with these details. It saves a round of back and forth.

  1. Your logo file. A vector file (PDF, AI, SVG or CDR) is best. A sharp, high-resolution PNG also works.
  2. Tape colour, brown or clear.
  3. Quantity in boxes of 72 rolls, with 5 boxes as the minimum.
  4. Your delivery PIN code.
  5. Any text besides the logo, such as your website, handle or phone number.
  6. The print colours you have in mind.
  7. The date you need the tape, keeping about 14 days for printing.
  8. Your GSTIN, if you want it on the invoice.

Ask us the roll length, the repeat options and the price per roll in the same message. Then approve the final artwork in writing before printing starts.

Not ready for 360 rolls? Use a ready-printed tape

You do not need a minimum to get printed tape on your cartons. Our printed tapes come in normal packs of a few rolls.

The fragile tape is white, 2 inch x 65 m, with a fragile warning printed on it. It suits glass, ceramics and anything you want handled gently, though a warning on tape is not a cushion. I have looked at what it really does in does fragile tape work.

We also make marketplace-printed tapes for sellers on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, JioMart, Ajio and others. These are our own products. They are not made for, or endorsed by, those companies.

None of these carry your name, of course.

But a printed tape on day one looks tidier than plain tape, and it buys you time until your volume is ready for your own logo.

Trust me, there is no shame in waiting. A brand that orders logo tape at the right volume uses every roll fresh.

Questions buyers ask

Will logo tape stop people from opening my parcels?

No tape can do that. What it does is make tampering easier to spot, because a carton opened and closed again with plain tape no longer matches the rest of your seams.

Does logo tape cost more than plain tape?

Per roll, yes, because printing is an extra step. The fair comparison is per carton. Put logo tape against plain tape plus one sticker plus the time it takes to stick it. Ask us for the price per roll of logo tape, check the brown or clear tape listings for today's price of plain tape, and do the sum for your own cartons.

Will I get a GST invoice?

Yes. Every PackSmith order comes with a GST invoice. Share your GSTIN when you enquire and we will put it on the invoice.

Send us your logo and how many cartons you ship in a month. If 360 rolls is too much for you today, we will say so.
