Does 'Fragile' tape make couriers handle your parcel better?
We sell fragile tape. So I should be the last person to tell you it does not protect your parcel.
But it does not. Not on its own.
Here is the short answer. Large courier networks in India now sort parcels by machine, and a machine reads the barcode, not the word FRAGILE. Fragile tape is a request, not protection. It is still worth using, because it helps at the last mile, it reminds your own packers to take care, it tells the customer you cared, and it is what couriers ask you to mark. The protection itself has to come from inside the box.
What actually happens to your parcel after pickup?
A parcel from a small seller usually goes through a pickup van, a first hub, one or more sort centres, a truck between cities, a delivery hub and finally a delivery bike. It is lifted, dropped onto belts, stacked under other parcels and shaken for hours on the road.
The big networks are now built around machines. Delhivery's Annual Report 2024-25 says the company ran 45 fully and semi-automated sortation centres, with a rated automated sort capacity of 8.2 million shipments a day, as of 31 March 2025. That is one courier.
At that scale, nobody reads every box. The sorter scans the label and sends the parcel down a chute.
A carton marked FRAGILE goes down the same chute as one that is not.

I am not blaming the couriers for this. Fast, cheap delivery across India is possible because of these machines. It just means your packing has to survive them.
If tape does not protect the parcel, why do couriers ask for a Fragile label?
Because a label still helps wherever a person handles the box, and because it records what you declared.
Delhivery's packaging guidelines list Fragile among the special handling labels. India Post's Parcel Packaging Standards (Parcel Directorate, 2022) include special handling labels for fragile items, and say proper use of these labels helps in handling and storage.
Read the rest of both documents, though. In the same guidance, Delhivery asks for enough cushioning that no load reaches the item, and 5 ply cartons for products that are above 4 kg and fragile. India Post's basic single-box method already asks for at least 6 cm between the item and every wall. For more fragile items, it suggests a second outer box at least 10 cm bigger in every direction.
So the couriers themselves treat the label as the last step, not the main one.
Where does Fragile tape actually help?
Here is my honest reading of who sees your tape, and whether it changes anything.
| Who handles the parcel | Do they read the tape? | Does it change anything? |
|---|---|---|
| Automated sorter | No, it reads the barcode | No |
| Loaders at a hub | Sometimes, when they have a second | Maybe, you cannot count on it |
| Delivery person at the last mile | Often, the parcel is in their hands | Yes, a little more care at the door |
| Your own packer | Yes, every time | Yes, if you make it a rule |
| Your customer | Yes, at the door | Yes, they see a seller who cared |
The rows I care about most are your packer and your customer, because those are the ones you control. There is also a third reason that is not in the table.
- Your packing table. Make one simple rule: the carton that gets fragile tape also gets the full fragile routine. Each item wrapped on its own, gaps filled, H-tape on both faces, a shake before it closes. The roll of fragile tape on the table becomes the reminder.
- Your customer. A box that arrives with fragile tape on it tells the customer you knew what was inside and took care. If something does break, that goodwill helps when you have to ask them for photos of the damage.
- Your evidence. If a parcel arrives damaged, couriers ask for proof. Delhivery's claims help page (updated September 2026) asks for at least 2 images or 1 video of the product with the AWB number visible, within 72 hours of delivery, and accepts a video of the packing as extra support. A packing video that shows the wrap, the fill, the H-tape and the fragile marking is a far better record than a sticker alone.
Fragile tape does not win a claim by itself.
It is one part of showing that you packed properly.
Where does Fragile tape do nothing, or even hurt?
- On a box with no cushioning inside. This is the mistake I would fix first. The tape is outside, the damage happens inside.
- On every parcel you send. If your T-shirts also go out with fragile tape, it means nothing, to your packers or to the courier.
- Over the shipping label. India Post's standards say tape should not cover address labels or bar codes. A barcode that does not scan can slow your parcel down and put it through more hands.
- On courier bags. A soft bag of clothes is not fragile, and a glass item should not be in a courier bag at all.
What protects a fragile parcel, then?
The inside of the box. I will keep this short, because our guide on how to pack fragile orders without plastic covers it step by step.
- Wrap each item on its own. Honeycomb paper or bubble wrap, two or three layers on glass.
- Leave space. At least 6 cm between the item and every wall, which India Post's standards ask for even in an ordinary parcel.
- Fill every gap so nothing can move. Our guide on how much void fill paper per carton gives starting quantities.
- Use a strong box. 5 ply for fragile items, and box-in-box for the really delicate ones.
- Seal it with the H pattern on both faces. Our guide on how to tape a shipping carton shows how.
- Then add the fragile tape.
How should you use Fragile tape on a carton?
Our fragile packaging tape is a white 2 inch x 65 m roll printed in red with "FRAGILE" and "HANDLE WITH CARE". It comes in sets of 6 to 30 rolls, and you can use it to seal the carton, not just to decorate it.

- Seal the bottom with plain brown or clear tape first. Nobody reads the bottom of a box.
- On the top, use fragile tape for the H, so the print sits on the face people see.
- Add one strip down a side wall. Parcels get turned on their side, and a top-only warning disappears.
- Keep every strip clear of the shipping label and its barcode.
We would rather lose a small sale than sell you something you do not need. If you only ship a few fragile orders a month, you do not need a printed roll at all. Write FRAGILE in big letters with a thick marker on two faces. It does the same job. A printed roll makes sense once fragile orders are a daily thing and you want every packer to do it the same way.
Questions sellers ask about fragile tape
Is fragile tape worth the extra cost over plain tape?
Only if you ship fragile items often. For a few orders a month, a marker is enough. See the listing for today's price and compare it per metre with plain tape.
Does a fragile label mean the courier must pay if it breaks?
No. A label is an instruction, not insurance. What the courier pays depends on their own terms and on how you packed. Ask your courier about declared value or insurance for expensive items.
Should I put a "This way up" arrow as well?
For liquids, and for anything that must stay upright, yes. For a wrapped mug, it matters less than the packing inside.
Sellers often ask us for a tape that will stop breakage. We make tape every day in Jaipur, and I wish we could sell one. What I can tell you is that a well-packed box with plain tape will beat a badly packed box with fragile tape, almost every time.
