How to pack and ship Diwali gift hampers without breakage

A Diwali hamper is the hardest parcel a small seller ships all year. It has glass, clay diyas, sweets with a short life and a customer who is gifting it to someone they want to impress.

One cracked jar, and the whole box is a loss.

Here is the short answer. Build the hamper in a rigid tray or box, bed it in crinkle paper, wrap every glass jar and diya on its own, seal each food item separately, and then put the hamper box inside a brown shipping carton with paper fill on all sides. Close it and shake it.

If anything moves, you are not done.

When is Diwali 2026, and when should you stop taking orders?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Dhanteras falls two days earlier, on Friday, 6 November, as per the Drik Panchang Diwali calendar for 2026 (New Delhi). The Central Government holiday list for 2026 also marks 8 November as Diwali.

Many gift buyers want the hamper in hand before Dhanteras, not on the day. So plan backwards from 6 November. This is my suggested timeline for a small gifting business. It is advice, not a courier promise. Every courier sets its own festival cut-offs, so ask yours and trust their dates over mine.

We dispatch PackSmith orders in 1 to 2 working days, so packing material ordered by mid-October reaches you with time to test it.

By this date What to do
10 October Order samples of filler and wrap, and pack one test hamper
15 October Stock up on crinkle paper, honeycomb wrap, tape and cartons for the full season
20 October Close corporate gifting orders, because 50 hampers take days to assemble
25 to 27 October Last day for pan-India orders to far PIN codes, if you want them there before Dhanteras
1 to 2 November Last day for metro-to-metro orders, with a fast service only
After that Local delivery, or hand delivery, only

Festival weeks are busy for every courier, so build a few extra days into every promise.

I would rather tell a customer "sorry, too late for Diwali" on 28 October than refund a hamper that reached on 10 November.

How do you build a hamper that survives the courier?

Start with the base. A basket looks lovely on the shop counter, but it bends in a courier sack. Use a rigid tray or a strong box as the hamper itself.

We sell the wrap, the filler and the tape. We do not sell rigid hamper boxes or printed trays, so buy those from a local box maker.

Then build it in this order:

  1. Lay a 3 to 4 cm bed of crinkle paper on the floor of the tray.
  2. Wrap every glass jar, bottle and diya in honeycomb paper. One sheet, or about 50 cm torn from a roll, covers a normal jar. Diyas can go two or three in one wrap if they nest well.
  3. Put the heaviest items at the bottom and in the centre. Light things go on top and at the edges.
  4. Push crinkle paper into every gap between items, until they cannot touch each other.
  5. Put a last layer of crinkle on top, place the card, and close the lid.

Crinkle paper is the bed and the look. It is not enough cushion for glass on its own, and I will not pretend otherwise. We make paper wrap in our own plant in Jaipur, and we would still never send a jar out in crinkle alone. Glass needs its own wrap first. That is the job of honeycomb paper, as a roll or as pre-cut sheets, or of our kraft paper bubble wrap sheets. If you are deciding between paper wrap and plastic bubble wrap, read honeycomb paper vs bubble wrap.

Do food items need their own seal?

Yes. Every food item should be sealed in its own pack before it goes into the hamper. A cracked jar of pickle or a leaking ghee lid will stain everything around it, and a box of kaju katli that has touched broken glass cannot be gifted.

  1. Sweets go in their own closed box, with a strip of tape across the lid joint.
  2. Dry fruits and namkeen stay in their sealed packs.
  3. Jars with oil, honey or ghee get a strip of tape over the lid, and then a wrap.
  4. Keep milk sweets for local orders. For pan-India hampers, choose dry sweets, dry fruits and cookies that can take a week on the road.

Our zip lock pouches are useful for keeping the small non-food bits together, like a rangoli colour set or a pack of wicks. Our listing does not claim food grade, so I would not put loose sweets in them.

What is the double-box method, and when do you need it?

The hamper box is the gift. The outer brown carton is for the courier.

For any hamper with glass, use both.

Pick an outer carton about 5 cm bigger than the hamper box on every side. Put crumpled paper or void fill on the floor, place the hamper box in the middle, and fill all four walls and the top. The courier's knocks land on the outer carton and the paper, not on your jars.

There is one more reason I like this.

A plain brown carton does not look like a gift on the way. A shiny hamper box with a ribbon tells everyone in the chain that something nice is inside.

You can try our brown carton through the free sample listing before you commit. Our guide on how much void fill paper goes into a carton helps you plan the fill.

Seal the outer carton with brown tape on the top and bottom seams. If you want a warning on the box, our fragile packaging tape is 2 inch x 65 m with a printed fragile message. Be realistic about it. A fragile print can help someone handle the box more carefully, but it does not stop a sorting belt. The packing inside does that. We have looked at this question honestly in does fragile tape work.

How do you do the shake test?

Close the outer carton and tape it. Hold it with both hands and shake it hard, side to side and then up and down. Listen.

If you hear anything slide or clink, open it and add paper where it moved. Shake again.

Do this on the first hamper of every new design, and again whenever you change the jars or the box size. It takes thirty seconds.

It is also the cheapest quality inspection in packaging.

How much wrap and filler do you need for the season?

Here is simple maths for a hamper with 2 glass jars and a set of diyas wrapped in 2 bundles. That is 4 wraps of about 50 cm, so about 2 m of honeycomb paper per hamper.

Wrap you buy What you get Hampers it covers (at 2 m each)
Honeycomb paper roll, 10 m 390 mm wide, 7 colours About 5
Honeycomb paper roll, 100 m 390 mm wide, 6 colours About 50
Honeycomb sheets, pack of 20 390 x 500 mm each About 5 (4 sheets each)
Honeycomb sheets, pack of 50 390 x 500 mm each About 12
Kraft bubble sheets, pack of 50 300 x 400 mm each About 12 (4 sheets each)

Crinkle paper comes in 500 g and 1 kg packs. How far it goes depends on your box size, so measure it once. Weigh the crinkle you use in one finished hamper, then divide 500 g or 1 kg by that number. Now you know how many packs to order for 100 hampers.

We would much rather you order the right quantity once than order in a panic on 30 October.

Where does the card go, and the invoice?

The card goes on top, under the lid, in its own envelope so the crinkle does not hide it and no oil can reach it. Write it before you start packing, not at the end when you are tired.

The invoice and paperwork go outside, on the outer carton, in a packing list envelope. That keeps paperwork out of the unboxing moment. Stick it on the largest flat face of the carton, next to the shipping label, never across the tape seam.

How do you make a hamper look premium without spending much?

Most of the "premium" feeling comes from colour and order. It does not come from expensive boxes.

  1. Pick two colours and stick to them. Red and yellow crinkle look like Diwali. Brown crinkle with white looks calm and expensive.
  2. Match the wrap to the filler. Our honeycomb roll comes in seven colours in the 10 m size, so a red wrap on a red bed looks planned.
  3. Let the customer see the products first, not the filler. Fill to just below the top of the jars.
  4. A handwritten line on the card beats a printed one.
  5. Keep the outer carton plain and clean. The surprise is inside.

We have been making paper packaging in Jaipur since 1997, and sellers often tell us the same Diwali story. The ones who test one hamper in early October have a calm November. The ones who start on the 1st spend Dhanteras answering complaints.

Questions sellers ask before Diwali

Can I ship a hamper in a basket? Only inside a carton. Put the finished basket in a brown box with paper fill on every side. A bare basket will not survive a courier sack.

Which crinkle colours do you have? We list blue, green, yellow, red, white, black, brown and mixed colours, in 500 g and 1 kg packs. See the crinkle paper collection for the current colours in stock.

Do you take bulk or corporate gifting orders? Yes. For a large corporate order, write to us through the contact page with your hamper size and quantity, and we will suggest the wrap and filler.

Can I test the material first? Yes. The sample listing has crinkle paper, a honeycomb roll, a kraft bubble sheet and a brown carton. Order those now, pack one hamper, and shake it.

Delivery is free across India on every order. Happy Diwali in advance, and may this one be your busiest season yet.
