Kraft paper bubble sheets: what they protect, and what they don't
A paperback, a photo frame and a box of lipsticks have one thing in common. None of them is likely to shatter. Yet all three come back as returns when a corner gets dented or a face gets scratched in transit.
That is the job a kraft paper bubble sheet does best.
So here is the short answer. Kraft paper bubble sheets protect flat and boxed products well (books, frames, palettes, cosmetic boxes, electronics accessories) against knocks, scuffs and dented corners inside a carton. One 300 x 400 mm sheet wraps a paperback or a phone accessory box, and most small orders need 1 to 3 sheets. On their own, they are not enough for heavy items, sharp corners or very fragile glass, and they do not like water.
What is a kraft paper bubble sheet?
It is a sheet of kraft paper with a raised bubble pattern across its face, cut to 300 x 400 mm. We sell our kraft paper bubble wrap sheets in packs of 20, 50 and 200. After use, the sheet goes out with paper waste.
Be careful with one thing when you compare listings online. Some products sold as "kraft bubble" are plastic bubble wrap with a layer of brown paper stuck on top. In a photo they look almost the same. Underneath they are plastic, and your customer cannot put them out with paper waste. Ours is paper.
If a listing does not say what the bubbles are made of, ask before you buy.
Paper bubble wrap is close to my heart.
We make paper packaging in our own plant in Jaipur, and we have been manufacturing since 1997. At JPPL we also export paper bubble wrap, and the machines that make it, to buyers in the UK, Germany and the USA. So we know this material from the machine side as well as from the packing table.

Should you wrap, line or layer?
There are three ways to use a sheet. Most sellers only use the first one.
- Wrapping. The sheet goes all the way around the product. Use it when the product itself can get scratched or dented: a book, a frame, a gadget box. Fold the ends under the product like a gift, and its weight holds them down. If a light item keeps springing open, add a short strip of paper tape.
- Lining. Lay one sheet flat on the floor of the carton and stand more sheets against the walls. The products sit in a paper bed. This is the quick way when one carton holds several small boxes and wrapping each one would take too long.
- Layering. Put one sheet between items that are stacked. In many Indian homes, steel plates go up to the loft with a sheet of newspaper between each one, so they do not scratch each other. It is the same idea. A set of books, two frames face to face, or a stack of soap boxes all pack better this way.
My rule is simple. Wrap when the product can get hurt on its own.
Line or layer when the risk is products rubbing against each other, or against the box.
Which products suit kraft paper bubble sheets?
The sizes below are typical, not exact. Measure your own product.
| Product | Typical size | Method | Sheets (approx.) | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paperback book | 20 x 13 x 2 cm | Wrap | 1 | Corners dent first |
| Hardcover book | 24 x 16 x 3 cm | Wrap | 1 to 2 | Spine corners |
| 3 to 5 books in one carton | varies | Layer, and line the base | 3 to 5 | Books sliding against each other |
| A4 photo frame | about 32 x 24 x 2 cm | Wrap | 2, overlapped | Glass and sharp corners (see limits) |
| Eyeshadow palette, compact mirror | 12 x 8 x 1.5 cm | Wrap | 1, or half a sheet | Cracks if the case bends |
| Cosmetics gift box | 20 x 15 x 8 cm | Wrap or line | 2 | A dented gift box is a return |
| Earbuds, charger or phone cover box | 15 x 10 x 5 cm | Wrap | 1 | Scuffs on the retail box |
| Several small boxes in one carton | varies | Line and layer | 2 to 4 | Gaps, so add fill |
Here is the check behind the "sheets" column. One sheet wraps a product when twice its width plus twice its thickness, plus about 3 cm of overlap, comes to 40 cm or less. Its length plus thickness should stay under 30 cm, so the ends can fold.
A paperback works out to 2 x 13 + 2 x 2 + 3 = 33 cm. One sheet is enough. An A4 frame comes to 2 x 24 + 2 x 2 + 3 = 55 cm. That needs two sheets, overlapped by a few centimetres.
How many sheets does a typical order need?
For most small orders, 1 to 3 sheets.
To decide which pack to buy, multiply your orders by your sheets per order.
| Orders a month | Sheets per order | Sheets a month | Pack that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 1 | 20 | One pack of 20 (good for a trial) |
| 40 | 2 | 80 | Two packs of 50 |
| 100 | 2 | 200 | One pack of 200 |
| 250 | 2 | 500 | Three packs of 200 |
We price the pack of 200 much lower per sheet than the smaller packs. See the listing for today's price.
One piece of advice before you buy the big pack. Pack one normal week of orders and count the sheets you actually used. Your number is better than my table.
Can you combine bubble sheets with honeycomb wrap or void fill?

Yes, and for anything made of glass, you should.
We sell both materials, so we have no reason to push one over the other.
Honeycomb paper is the better first wrap for round and odd shapes like bottles, jars and mugs, because it stretches and follows the curve. A flat sheet does not hug a curve as well. So for glass, I would use honeycomb paper first and a bubble sheet over it where the item is flat or weak. The full step-by-step method is in how to pack fragile orders without plastic, so I will not repeat it here.
Void fill does a different job. It stops the product from moving.
I would not crumple bubble sheets into the gaps of a carton. It works, but you are paying for bubbles to do what plain crumpled paper does for less.
Is it recyclable, and what should you tell your customer?
The sheet is kraft paper, and it is recyclable with paper waste. Tell your customer exactly that, in plain words. A small line on your invoice or thank-you card is enough: "This wrap is paper. Reuse it, or put it out with your paper waste."
Avoid big claims like "100% eco-friendly" or "zero waste" unless you can prove them. In October 2024, the Central Consumer Protection Authority issued guidelines against greenwashing. Its press release names vague terms such as "natural", "eco-friendly" and "green", and says companies must back environmental claims with credible evidence. A specific, true sentence is safer and more convincing too.
Keep the whole parcel paper if you make that promise. A paper wrap stuck down with plastic tape means your customer has to peel the tape off first. Sheets that come out of the box clean and dry can easily do a second trip, so reuse is a fair thing to suggest.
Where do kraft paper bubble sheets fall short?
I will be straight with you. Paper is not plastic, and I would rather lose a sale of sheets than see you lose a customer.
- Heavy items. A cast iron pan, a set of glass jars or a small appliance crushes paper bubbles at the first hard knock. Use plastic bubble wrap or air cushions, and a stronger carton. We have compared the two in honeycomb paper vs bubble wrap.
- Sharp corners. Metal frame corners, tools and steel cutlery can tear paper where they press on it during a drop. Then the corner hits the carton wall directly. Fold a double layer over each corner, or add cardboard corner pieces.
- Very fragile items. Wine glasses, thin glass and figurines with thin arms need several wraps, a bed of fill and space on every side. One bubble sheet is not enough.
- Wet routes. Paper takes up water. In the monsoon, put the carton inside a courier bag, or use plastic cushioning for that route.
- Big items. A sheet is 300 x 400 mm. Overlapping five sheets around one large item is slow, and a roll makes more sense there.
If you are still unsure, take a kraft bubble sheet in our free sample kit. Wrap your most difficult product, pack it the way you normally would, and let the closed carton drop from waist height onto a hard floor. Then open it and look at the corners.
Testing one carton costs far less than finding out on fifty.
Questions sellers ask
Can I cut a sheet in half?
Yes. For a palette or a small accessory, half a sheet is often enough. Fold it, press the fold with your thumbnail and cut along it with scissors.
Is it good for moving house?
For crockery, decor pieces and framed photos packed into cartons, yes. For a whole house, though, you will need hundreds of sheets, and a honeycomb paper roll that you tear to any length is quicker to work with.
I ship books in bulk to a reseller. Do I still need sheets?
Line the base and put a sheet between each layer of books, so the covers do not rub. For several cartons going to one buyer, number each carton (1 of 3, 2 of 3 and so on) and put the invoice in the first one.
